The Nine Islands Tour of Mayapur Dham

Navadvipa Dham, popularly known as Mayapur Dham, is the sacred abode of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. The dham is spread across nine islands formed by the holy Ganges and Jalangi rivers. Each island represents one of the nine limbs of devotional service (Navadha Bhakti) and has its own unique spiritual significance, temples, and pastime places (lila-sthalis). Pilgrims traditionally perform the Navadvipa Dham Parikrama by visiting these nine islands to experience the complete journey of devotion.

1. Antardvipa – Ātma Nivedanam (Complete Surrender)

Antardvipa is the heart of Navadvipa Dham and the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It is the spiritual center of the entire dham.

2. Simantadvipa – Śravaṇam (Hearing)

Simantadvipa is named after the pastime in which Goddess Parvati received the mercy of Lord Gauranga by hearing His glories. It emphasizes the importance of hearing transcendental knowledge.

  • Chaitanya Math established by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura
  • Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's Samadhi

3. Godrumadvipa – Kīrtanam (Congregational Chanting)

Godrumadvipa is famous for devotional singing and preaching. The peaceful rural atmosphere makes it ideal for chanting the Holy Name.

  • Bhajan Kutir of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura
  • Suvarna Vihar

  • Nrisimha Temple

4. Madhyadvipa – Smaraṇam (Remembrance)

Madhyadvipa represents constant remembrance of Lord Krishna and Lord Gauranga. Ancient sages are said to have gathered here for scriptural discussions.

  • Panchaveni 

5. Koladvipa – Pāda Sevanam (Service to the Lord's Lotus Feet)

Koladvipa is associated with the mercy of the Lord and the service of His lotus feet. Much of present-day Nabadwip town lies within this island.

6. Rtudvipa – Arcanam (Deity Worship)

Rtudvipa symbolizes worship through offerings, rituals, and loving service. It is known for its serene villages and devotional atmosphere.

  • Champahati Gaur Gadhadar temple
  • Vidya Nagar
  • Peaceful devotional communities

7. Jahnudvipa – Vandanam (Prayer)

Named after Sage Jahnu, this island is associated with offering heartfelt prayers and glorification of the Lord.

  • Jahnu Muni Ashram
  • Jahnu Kund
  • Ganga worship sites

8. Modadrumadvipa – Dāsyam (Loving Service)

Modadrumadvipa is associated with humble service to the Lord. Tradition holds that Lord Rama rested beneath a great banyan tree here during His exile and foretold the appearance of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

9. Rudradvipa – Sakhyam (Friendship)

Rudradvipa is connected with Lord Shiva, who eternally glorifies Lord Gauranga and Lord Krishna. It represents the devotional mood of friendship with the Supreme Lord.

Navadvipa Dham Parikrama

The traditional Navadvipa Dham Parikrama covers all nine islands over several days, allowing pilgrims to experience the complete path of Navadha Bhakti. Along the route, devotees visit hundreds of sacred temples, bathing ghats, samadhis of great Vaishnava acharyas, bhajan kutirs, ancient trees, and pastime places associated with Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates.
