Simantadvip (Simantadwip) Tour
Simantadvip is one of the nine sacred islands of Navadvipa Dhama. According to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, this island represents śravaṇam (hearing about the Lord) in the nine processes of devotional service. It is famous because Simantini Devi Temple is the place where Mother Parvati (Simantini Devi) received the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu by placing the dust of His lotus feet in the parting of her hair (simanta).
Why is it Called "Simantadvip"?
The word "Simanta" means the parting of a woman's hair, and "Dvipa" means island.
According to the Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Mother Parvati desired to attain the causeless mercy of Lord Gauranga after hearing from her husband, Lord Shiva, about the extraordinary compassion of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
She came to this sacred place and performed deep austerities and devotional worship. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Gauranga blessed her. In great reverence and love, Mother Parvati collected the dust of His lotus feet and placed it in the parting (simanta) of her hair.
From that divine pastime, this island became known as Simantadvip—the island where the Lord's lotus-foot dust adorned the simanta of Mother Parvati.
The Rajapur Jagannath Temple is one of the most sacred places in Navadvipa Dhama. Located in Rajapur within Simantadvipa, this temple is renowned because Lord Jagannath personally manifested here to bless devotees who could not regularly travel to Puri. According to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, Lord Jagannath of Rajapur is non-different from Lord Jagannath of Jagannath Temple.
Glories of Rajapur Jagannath Temple
1. Lord Jagannath Came to Navadvipa
According to the history recorded by Bhaktivinoda Thakura in Navadvipa-dhama Mahatmya, during the invasion of Odisha by the demonic king Raktabahu (around the 7th century), the servitors of Lord Jagannath carried the Deities away from Puri to protect Them. They brought the Lord to Rajapur in Navadvipa, where He remained hidden for many years before eventually returning to Puri. Thus, Rajapur became eternally sanctified by the Lord's presence.
2. The Deities Reappeared in the Time of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu
During the pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a great devotee named Jagadisa Ganguli was too old to continue his annual pilgrimage to Puri. Out of compassion, Lord Jagannath appeared to him in a dream and instructed him to excavate a particular place in Rajapur. There Jagadisa discovered the beautiful Deities of Jagannath, Baladeva, Subhadra, and Sudarshana, who have been worshipped ever since.
3. Rediscovery in 1958
Over time the original temple became forgotten. In 1958, devotees again discovered the Deities and restored Their worship. Today the temple is lovingly maintained by ISKCON Mayapur, allowing thousands of pilgrims to receive Lord Jagannath's mercy every year.
4. Jagannath of Rajapur is Non-Different from Puri Jagannath
Gaudiya Vaishnavas worship Rajapur Jagannath with the understanding that He is the same Supreme Lord worshipped in Puri. Devotees who visit Rajapur with faith receive the spiritual benefit of Jagannath's mercy even while residing in Navadvipa Dhama.
5. A Place of Special Mercy
The Lord appeared here especially to fulfill the desire of His elderly devotee who could no longer undertake the long journey to Puri. This pastime beautifully demonstrates that the Lord becomes controlled by the love of His devotees.
The Glories of Simantadvip
1. Simantadvipa – The Island of Hearing
Rajapur is situated in Simantadvipa, the island representing Śravaṇam (hearing) among the nine processes of devotional service. Pilgrims are encouraged to hear the glories of Lord Jagannath, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and the holy dhama while visiting this sacred place.
2. The Place of Lord Gauranga's Supreme Mercy
Simantadvip reveals that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu freely bestows His mercy upon anyone who sincerely approaches Him with humility and devotion.
3. Represents Śravaṇam
Each of the nine islands represents one limb of devotional service. Simantadvip represents Śravaṇam, the process of hearing the holy names, scriptures, and pastimes of the Lord.

Although Mother Parvati is worshipped throughout the universe, she desired to become the servant of the devotees and receive the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Simantadvip teaches that genuine humility attracts the Lord's mercy.
5. Worshipped by Lord Shiva and Parvati
Lord Shiva constantly glorifies Navadvipa Dhama and encouraged Mother Parvati to visit this sacred island to receive Mahaprabhu's mercy. This makes Simantadvip one of the most spiritually significant places in Navadvipa.
6. Madana Gopala Temple (Belpukur)
The Madana Gopala Temple at Belpukur (Bilvapakṣa) in Simantadvipa is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Sri Navadvipa Dhama. The presiding Deity, Sri Madana Gopala, was worshipped by Nilambara Chakravarti, the maternal grandfather of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The Deity has been lovingly preserved and worshipped through generations and remains an important stop during Navadvipa Parikrama.
Historical Importance
Nilambara Chakravarti was one of the foremost Vedic scholars and astrologers of Navadvipa. He migrated from Srihatta (present-day Sylhet) to Belpukur with his family, including his daughter Sachi Devi. At his residence he established the worship of Sri Madana Gopala, and this Deity later became one of the treasured Deities of Navadvipa Dhama.
After the appearance of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, this place became even more glorious because it was the home of Mahaprabhu's maternal family. Devotees therefore regard the temple not only as a place of Krishna worship but also as a sacred reminder of Mahaprabhu's family heritage.
The Meaning of "Madana Gopala"
The name Madana Gopala carries profound spiritual significance.
- Madana means Cupid, the god of material attraction.
- Gopala means Krishna, the protector of the cows.
Krishna is called Madana Gopala because His incomparable beauty enchants even Madana (Cupid). Thus, He is the supreme attractor of all living beings. His beauty does not awaken material desire; rather, it awakens pure love (prema) for the Supreme Lord.

Within the Belpukur area, pilgrims also visit Pañca-vakra Śiva Tola, where Lord Shiva is traditionally worshipped as a guardian of Navadvipa Dhama. This further highlights the spiritual importance of Belpukur as a sacred pilgrimage destination.
