Madhyadvipa (Madhyadwip) – The Island of Smaraṇam (Remembrance)
Madhyadvipa is the fourth island of Sri Navadvipa Dhama and represents Smaraṇam (constant remembrance of the Supreme Lord), the third process of Navadha Bhakti described in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
The word "Madhya" means "middle" or "central", and "Dvipa" means "island." Since this island lies in the central portion of Sri Navadvipa Dhama, it became known as Madhyadvipa.
Madhyadvipa is a place where devotees cultivate remembrance of Sri Krishna and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu through hearing, chanting, and meditation on Their eternal pastimes.
Why is it Called Madhyadvipa?
Although "Madhya" literally means "middle" or "central", the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition also preserves another beautiful explanation for the name.
According to the Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya, a great brāhmaṇa came to this sacred place desiring to attain the mercy of the Supreme Lord. Every day, at midday (madhyāhna), he performed severe austerities, meditation, and worship with unwavering determination.
Pleased by his sincere devotion, the Lord bestowed His mercy upon him. Because this holy place became famous for the madhyāhna (midday) austerities performed by the saintly brāhmaṇa, it came to be known as Madhyadvipa.
This pastime reminds pilgrims that sincere remembrance of the Lord, even during one's daily duties, attracts His divine grace.
Glorification of Madhyadvipa
1. The Island of Smaraṇam
Among the nine limbs of devotional service, Madhyadvipa represents Smaraṇam, or remembering the Lord.
Remembrance includes:
- Meditating on Krishna's names.
- Remembering His form.
- Remembering His qualities.
- Remembering His pastimes.
- Remembering the instructions of Guru and the scriptures.
Continuous remembrance purifies the heart and strengthens one's relationship with the Supreme Lord.
2. Naimiṣāraṇya of Navadvipa
Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition identifies Madhyadvipa with the spiritual counterpart of Naimisharanya.
Just as the sages headed by Śaunaka Ṛṣi assembled at Naimiṣāraṇya to hear Sūta Gosvāmī recite the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, devotees in Madhyadvipa gather to hear Hari-kathā, chant the Holy Name, and remember the Lord.
This makes Madhyadvipa a sacred place for scriptural study, contemplation, and spiritual discussion.
3. Hamsa Vāhana Temple
According to the devotional tradition of Navadvipa Dhama, Lord Shiva once arrived in Madhyadvipa accompanied by Lord Brahma, who was riding his Hamsa (swan).
As Lord Shiva accepted the Hamsa Vāhana (swan carrier) in this pastime, the Deity worshipped here became famous as Hamsa Vāhana Śiva.

- Even the greatest demigods come to Navadvipa to receive the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
- Lord Brahma represents transcendental knowledge, while Lord Shiva represents pure devotion.

- The swan (haṁsa) symbolizes spiritual discrimination—the ability to distinguish eternal truth from temporary illusion.
3. Puṣkara Tīrtha
The Glories of Puṣkara Tīrtha
Puṣkara Tīrtha is one of the sacred pilgrimage places within Madhyadvipa. According to the Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya, all the holy places of India eternally reside within Sri Navadvipa Dhama, and Puṣkara Tīrtha is worshipped as the manifestation of the famous Pushkar in this transcendental land.
Just as devotees travel to Pushkar in Rajasthan to obtain spiritual merit, Gaudiya Vaiṣṇavas understand that the holy places of the universe are spiritually present in Navadvipa because it is the eternal abode of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Why is Puṣkara Tīrtha Important?
Puṣkara Tīrtha reminds pilgrims that the purpose of visiting holy places is not merely ritual bathing but awakening remembrance of the Supreme Lord.
