Koladwip (Koladvipa) – The Island of Pada-sevanam (Service to the Lord's Lotus Feet)
Koladvipa is the fifth island of Sri Navadvipa Dhama and represents Pada-sevanam, the devotional process of lovingly serving the lotus feet of the Lord. Spiritually, Koladvipa is non-different from Bahulavana in Vrindavan.
Why is it called Koladvipa?
The word "Kola" refers to the boar incarnation, Lord Varaha. In Satya-yuga, a young brahmana named Vasudeva worshipped Lord Varaha with great devotion. Pleased by his service, Lord Varaha personally appeared before him and blessed this land. Because of this pastime, the island became famous as Koladvipa—the island of Lord Kola (Varaha).

1. The Place of Lord Varaha's Mercy
Lord Varaha revealed Himself here to His devotee Vasudeva and declared that this sacred place would become one of the nine islands of Navadvipa, granting pure devotion to sincere pilgrims. This sacred island is especially protected by Lord Varahadeva, the divine Boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Why is it called Koladvipa?
The Sanskrit word "Kola" means Boar, referring to Lord Varahadeva. After rescuing Mother Earth from the Garbhodaka Ocean by slaying the demon Hiranyaksha, Lord Varaha manifested His mercy in this region. Therefore, this island became known as Koladvipa—"the island of Lord Kola (Varaha)."
Lord Varaha's Pastime
The Navadvipa-dhama Mahatmya describes that a devoted brahmana named Vasudeva performed severe austerities here and worshipped Lord Varahadeva with great devotion. Pleased by his prayers, Lord Varaha personally appeared before him and blessed the place, declaring it to be an eternal part of Sri Navadvipa Dhama. From that time, Koladvipa has been known as the sacred abode of Lord Varaha.

Important Places to Visit in Koladvipa
1. Sri Vishnupriya Devi's House
This is the sacred residence of Sri Vishnupriya Devi, the eternal consort of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. After Mahaprabhu accepted sannyasa, Vishnupriya Devi spent the rest of her life in deep separation from Him.
Every day, she would chant one holy name of Krishna and place one grain of rice aside. After completing her chanting, she cooked only those grains and offered them to Mahaprabhu before honoring a very small amount as prasadam. Her life is the highest example of devotion, renunciation, patience, and unwavering love for the Lord.
Pilgrims visit this holy place to pray for steadfast devotion and the mercy to remain faithful in Krishna consciousness under all circumstances.
2. Paramatala
Paramatala is one of the most famous holy places in Navadvipa and is located within Koladvipa. It is renowned for its ancient banyan tree (Bata Tala) and beautiful temples dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, Subhadra, and Lord Shiva.
According to local tradition, this place has been a center of Hari-nama, devotional gatherings, and pilgrimage for centuries. During Navadvipa Mandala Parikrama, thousands of devotees stop here to chant the holy names, hear hari-katha, and receive the blessings of the sacred dhama.
The peaceful atmosphere of Paramatala inspires pilgrims to remember the eternal pastimes of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu and to deepen their devotional service.
3. Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja Samadhi Mandir
The Samadhi Mandir of Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja is one of the most sacred places in Koladvipa, Navadvipa Dhama. Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja is revered throughout the Gaudiya Vaishnava world as the Vaiṣṇava Sārvabhauma (the foremost of all Vaiṣṇavas) and the spiritual guardian of Sri Navadvipa Dhama.
Glories of Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja
Although he was more than 140 years old and physically unable to walk, Jagannath Das Babaji remained fully absorbed in chanting the holy names of Krishna. He constantly performed hari-nama and inspired countless devotees through his humility, devotion, and ecstatic love for Sri Sri Radha-Krishna and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Discovery of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Yogapitha
One of the greatest services of Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaja was confirming the actual birthplace (Yogapitha) of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
In 1887, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura brought the elderly Babaji Maharaja to the place he had identified through scripture and divine revelation. Although Babaji Maharaja had been carried there in a basket because of his advanced age, upon reaching the site he suddenly leapt from the basket and began dancing in ecstatic love of God, loudly chanting:
4. Devananda Gaudiya Math
This sacred place commemorates the transformation of Devananda Pandita, who was originally an impersonal scholar of the Bhagavatam. By receiving the mercy of Vakreshvara Pandita, he later received the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and became a pure devotee.
5. Samudragarh (Varaha Sthana)
A holy place connected with Lord Varaha's appearance and His blessings upon the brahmana Vasudeva. It preserves the remembrance of Koladvipa's original pastime.
6. Pancaveni Tirtha
One of the holiest bathing places in Navadvipa, where five sacred rivers—Bhagirathi, Mandakini, Alakananda, Yamuna, and Sarasvati—are said to mystically unite in service to Lord Gauranga. Bathing here with devotion is said to grant immense spiritual benefit.
