Jahnudvipa (Jhanudwip) – The Island of Vandanam (Prayer)
Jahnudvipa is the seventh island of Sri Navadvipa Dhama and represents Vandanam (offering prayers), the sixth process of Navadha Bhakti described in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
This sacred island is glorified as the residence of the great sage Jahnu Muni, whose extraordinary pastime with the sacred Ganges River gave the river one of her most famous names—Jāhnavī.
Jahnudvipa teaches that sincere prayers offered with humility and devotion attract the Lord's mercy and purify the heart.
Why is it Called Jahnudvipa?
The island is named after the great sage Jahnu Muni, who performed deep meditation and austerities here.
According to the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the Bhagavata Purana, when the celestial Ganges descended to Earth through the efforts of King Bhagiratha, her powerful current flooded the hermitage of Jahnu Muni, disturbing his sacrifice.
To stop the flood, Jahnu Muni mystically drank the entire Ganges River.
Later, when the demigods and King Bhagiratha offered heartfelt prayers, Jahnu Muni compassionately released the Ganges from his body (traditionally said to be from his ear), allowing her to continue her sacred journey.
From that day onward, Mother Ganga became famous as Jāhnavī, "the daughter of Jahnu."
Because this divine pastime took place here, the island became known as Jahnudvipa.

Jahnudvipa represents Vandanam, the devotional process of offering prayers.
A devotee offers prayers to:
- The Supreme Lord.
- Sri Guru.
- The Vaiṣṇavas.

2. The Mercy of Jahnu Muni
Jahnu Muni's pastime demonstrates both discipline and compassion.
Although he restrained the mighty Ganges, he later released her in response to sincere prayers.
This teaches that heartfelt humility softens even the sternest heart and invites divine mercy.
3. The Glory of Mother Jahnavi
Because Mother Ganga was accepted as the daughter of Jahnu Muni, devotees lovingly address her as Jāhnavī Devī.
Bathing in or respectfully honoring Mother Ganga while chanting the Holy Name is believed to purify the heart and strengthen one's devotion.
However, Gaudiya Vaiṣṇava teachers emphasize that the greatest purification comes through chanting the Holy Name with sincerity.
