Gudrumadvipa – The Third Island of Sri Navadvipa Dhama
Gudrumadvipa (also spelled Godrumadvipa) is one of the nine sacred islands (Nava-dvipa) of Sri Navadvipa Dhama. According to the Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya, this island represents Kīrtanam—the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord, one of the nine processes of devotional service (Navadha Bhakti).
The atmosphere of Gudrumadvipa is especially favorable for Harinama Sankirtana, devotional singing, and joyful remembrance of Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai.
Why is it Called "Gudrumadvipa"?
The name Gudruma (Godruma) comes from two Sanskrit words:
- Go = Cow
- Druma = Tree
Thus, Godruma literally means "the island of the cows beneath the trees" or "the forest of wish-fulfilling trees where cows peacefully graze."
According to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, after being delivered by Lord Vamana, the celestial cow Surabhi Cow came to this beautiful forest to worship **Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu>. She performed devotional worship beneath the sacred trees, and because of her presence, the island became known as Godruma (Gudruma).

1. The Island of Kīrtanam
Gudrumadvipa represents Kīrtanam, the devotional chanting of the Holy Names.
It is said that one who sincerely chants the Maha-mantra here receives the special mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

2. Surabhi Cow Worshipped Lord Gauranga Here
The celestial Surabhi Cow offered heartfelt prayers to Lord Gauranga in this sacred place. Her worship glorifies the Lord as the most merciful incarnation, who freely distributes pure love of God through the chanting of the Holy Name.
3. Nityananda Prabhu's Preaching Place
Gudrumadvipa is closely connected with Nityananda Prabhu, who spread the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu throughout Navadvipa by encouraging everyone to chant the Holy Name regardless of caste, wealth, or background.
4. Bhaktivinoda Thakura's Bhajana Place
This island is deeply connected with Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, who established Surabhi Kunja here and preached the universal message of Nama-hatta ("the Marketplace of the Holy Name"), inspiring devotees worldwide to practice and share Krishna consciousness.
5. Harihara Kṣetra
Harihara Kṣetra is a sacred pilgrimage site in the Navadvipa area where devotees remember the perfect unity between Lord Shiva (Hara) and Lord Vishnu (Hari) in serving the Supreme Lord.
The name Harihara is derived from:
- Hari – Lord Vishnu (Krishna)
- Hara – Lord Shiva
- Kṣetra – Holy place or sacred land
Thus, Harihara Kṣetra means "the sacred land of Hari and Hara."
According to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, Lord Shiva is the greatest of all Vaishnavas (vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ). In Navadvipa Dhama, he eternally assists the pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and protects the holy dhama. Harihara Kṣetra reminds pilgrims that true devotion transcends sectarian divisions, as Lord Shiva himself teaches devotion to Lord Krishna.

The name comes from:
- Nṛsiṁha – The Lord's lion incarnation.
- Palli – Village or settlement.
Thus, Nṛsiṁha Palli means "the village of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva."
According to the Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya, before manifesting His pastimes as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Lord appeared here in His Nṛsiṁha form to bless the residents of Navadvipa and to assure His devotees that He would always protect them during His earthly pastimes.
